Building on nearly a decade of support for OpenDev, VEXXHOST is expanding its infrastructure contribution to help power the OpenInfra Foundation’s websites and backend services.
Every OpenStack release is the result of thousands of contributions, from code changes and reviews to testing and documentation. Behind that work is another essential part of the open source ecosystem: the infrastructure that makes collaboration possible.
Code review platforms, continuous integration (CI) systems, testing environments, and compute resources all need to be maintained and operated. Infrastructure donors help make this work possible.
The OpenInfra Foundation is pleased to recognize VEXXHOST for its continued support, including a $100,000 infrastructure credit commitment for 2027. The contribution will support the Foundation’s websites and backend services on OpenStack, building on a relationship that began with VEXXHOST’s infrastructure support for OpenDev in 2016.
“VEXXHOST has been contributing to OpenStack since its earliest days, both through code and the infrastructure that supports our development community,” said Thierry Carrez, general manager of the OpenInfra Foundation. “Running the Foundation’s own infrastructure on an OpenStack-powered public cloud is a great demonstration highlighting the capabilities of what our community builds together.”
Supporting the Systems Behind OpenStack Development
OpenDev provides the development infrastructure used by OpenStack and other open source projects. Contributors rely on its services to submit and review code, run automated tests, and collaborate across projects and time zones.
Since 2016, VEXXHOST has provided infrastructure supporting several of these services:
Gerrit and Gitea: Code review and Git hosting infrastructure used by contributors.
DNS and backup services: Supporting essential operations and resilience across the OpenDev environment.
Continuous integration: Compute resources for automated testing, including high-memory instances and support for nested virtualization.
In addition to the services used by OpenDev, VEXXHOST also has the capability to provide GPU-enabled compute: Specialized resources for development and testing workloads that require accelerated hardware.
These resources are particularly important for OpenStack, where testing a code change can involve launching virtual machines, configuring virtual networks, and verifying interactions between multiple services.
Having sufficient compute capacity allows contributors to test these changes before they become part of a release.
VEXXHOST’s contributions are part of the broader infrastructure and engineering effort that keeps OpenDev operational, allowing developers to focus on improving open source software.
The Foundation previously explored this collaboration in the Superuser feature on VEXXHOST and OpenDev.
Running OpenInfra Foundation Services on OpenStack
The commitment marks a natural extension of VEXXHOST’s relationship with the OpenInfra community, putting OpenStack to work in support of the Foundation’s own operations.
The infrastructure credits will help cover the Foundation’s hosting requirements during 2027.
Experience That Goes Beyond Infrastructure Donations
VEXXHOST has operated OpenStack since its early releases, with involvement spanning upstream engineering, technical governance, and community infrastructure.
Founder and CEO Mohammed Naser serves as an Individual Director on the OpenInfra Foundation Governing Board and previously chaired the OpenStack Technical Committee. VEXXHOST was also recognized with the OpenStack Superuser Award in 2019.
“We’ve been running OpenStack in production since 2011, and our commitment to the community has always gone beyond simply using the technology,” said Mohammed Naser, founder and CEO of VEXXHOST. “Today, we’re proud that the OpenInfra Foundation relies on our infrastructure to support its own operations. It’s a testament to what we’ve built over the past 15 years and to the reliability and maturity of OpenStack in production.”
That combination of production experience and community participation brings an important perspective to open source development.
Operators working with OpenStack in production encounter challenges involving upgrades, networking, storage, and infrastructure reliability. Sharing that experience helps connect the needs of real-world deployments with the technical work happening upstream.
Sustaining Open Infrastructure Together
Sustaining open infrastructure takes more than code. It requires continued collaboration, operational expertise, and investment in the systems that support development.
The OpenInfra Foundation thanks VEXXHOST for its long-standing commitment, alongside the many contributors and infrastructure partners whose work makes open source development possible.
