Following the tradition of our Project Teams Gathering (PTG) summaries, the October 2026 PTG brought together developers, operators, and ecosystem contributors for a week of intensive cross-service alignment. With total attendance across all sessions exceeding 700 participants involved in conversations throughout the week, the community showed incredible engagement as it pivoted straight from the delivery of the OpenStack 2026.2 “Hibiscus” release into active planning for the upcoming 2027.1 “Indri” cycle, a designated SLURP (Skip-Level Upgrade Release Process) milestone. Discussions prioritized a variety of topics from AI workload provisioning to digital sovereignty to removing eventlet from OpenStack services.
Core Service Priorities for “Indri”
- Compute & Bare Metal (Nova & Ironic): Sessions built on Hibiscus confidential computing features (such as AMD SEV-SNP and Intel TDX), fine-tuning mediated device and vGPU resource tracking alongside Cyborg, and improving bare-metal automated lifecycle workflows for high-density AI and HPC workloads.
- Shared File Systems (Manila): The Manila team focused on high-demand enterprise filesystem capabilities, including share delete cascade mechanics, snapshot force creation, and deeper optimizations for CephFS native drivers alongside high-throughput Lustre and Weka backends.
- Networking (Neutron): Neutron contributors concentrated on scaling OVN-native multi-chassis deployments, streamlining smart-NIC and DPU hardware offloading paths, and improving operational troubleshooting tools across large distributed topologies.
- Storage & Images (Cinder & Glance): Conversations centered on NVMe-oF driver testing matrices, image-signature enforcement pipelines, and further hardening of cross-pool image-caching mechanics.
Cross-Project Goals & Technical Governance
- Keystone in Rust Exploration: A standout architectural discussion hosted by the Technical Committee evaluated prototype initiatives to rewrite performance-critical token validation paths in Rust to lower latency and memory overhead at hyperscale.
- Eventlet Removal Community Goal: Projects reviewed progress on migrating off legacy Eventlet concurrency towards standard asynchronous Python patterns across core control planes.
- Operator Feedback: Operators joined development leads to discuss upgrade friction, real-world maintenance tooling, and ongoing efforts to mitigate bus-factor risks across critical community libraries. Those who want to see the discussions firsthand can watch the OpenStack Ops PTG Session Recording. This recording captures the live October 2026 operator discussion covering upgrade experiences and production operational challenges.
