Talligent, the leading provider of cost and capacity management solutions for OpenStack and hybrid clouds, today announced the results of its inaugural ‘2016 State of OpenStack Report,’ an independent survey focused on identifying the key use cases, barriers and what’s driving OpenStack adoption.

The open source cloud computing project, OpenStack, has come a long way since NASA and Rackspace first launched it in 2010. However, with all of its recent successes, this survey shows there are still questions and debates that surround OpenStack that are worth answering.

Commissioned by Talligent through media firms CloudCow and VMblog, the 2016 State of OpenStack Report surveyed 647 virtualization and cloud IT professionals and executives from across the globe. The survey found respondents in varying stages of familiarity with the cloud technology ranging from those currently using it to support projects or production workloads (30 percent), evaluating it (32 percent) or familiar with it but not yet implementing the technology (36 percent). But once in place, respondents stated they expect to quickly expand beyond development environments, with lab growth moving from 43 percent to 89 percent and QA/Test to grow from 47 percent to 91 percent, both within the next 12 months.

The survey results also show that the top drivers for OpenStack adoption include respondent perception that public cloud costs are still too high (61 percent) and that there is a desire for using OpenStack clouds to improve responsiveness for IT service delivery (59 percent).

Other key findings asked and answered in the survey include:

  • What initiatives and requirements are driving adoption of OpenStack? 61% of survey respondents are adopting OpenStack to combat the expense of public cloud alternatives.
  • What are the most frequently identified challenges to OpenStack adoption? Security model (26%) and lack of Operational tools (23%) were the top challenges facing OpenStack.
  • How are companies expecting to incorporate private cloud into their IT plans? Private clouds will not be replaced by public clouds anytime soon, as 54% of respondents still expect their cloud use to be ALL or mostly private within the next 5 years.

“These survey findings are another positive indication that OpenStack is continuing to grow as a preferred method of building private and hybrid clouds for businesses of all sizes,” said Sanjay Mishra, founder and CEO of Talligent. “With the lack of operational tools and the issue of managing the cost structure being cited as two of the top challenges facing OpenStack adoption, we are excited that Talligent’s Openbook is uniquely positioned to address the needs of cloud subscribers with an easy to deploy solution that provides clear visibility of cloud costs, assigned and consumed resources, and utilization.”

Sanjay Mishra, CEO of Talligent, will present a session in the Demo Theater titled “Cost and Capacity Management for OpenStack” providing best practices regarding operational visibility and management reporting for OpenStack clouds. The OpenStack Summit is taking place from April 25 to 29, 2016 at the Austin Convention Center.
