Neutron and SLURM: Software-defined Networking for HPC Clusters

Los Alamos National Laboratory is continuing its work to enhance HPC with cloud technologies. The latest development is a SLURM plugin that allows the HPC resource manager to control a job's network access via Neutron. This plugin enables on-demand access to network resources and job segregation. I will describe how this plugin works and give a demonstration of its use.

What can I expect to learn?

Attendees will be introduced to new functionality in SLURM and learn about the ways in which this functionality can be used to increase the flexibility and enhance the security of their HPC platforms. They will also learn that OpenStack is a set of technologies that is complementary to traditional HPC technologies, enabling more diverse workloads on clusters.
