Containerizing Network Services

The increasing interest around application containers is driven by increasingly sophisticated applications, often distributed across data centers. Containers hide the complexity of the underlying infrastructure, allowing applications to integrate seamlessly and transparently.

With the increasing maturity of OpenStack Neutron, and increasing support for a large number of services, in this session we examine how SDNs can leverage the container technology for supporting "as a Service" components, which as opposed to application containers we call service containers. Such services include load balancing, virtual private networking, or dynamic routing in the upcoming Mitaka release, and for which containers can be a key component for any distributed SDN solution that wants to guarantee highly availability across physical hardware.

What can I expect to learn?

This talk is directed towards both SDN vendors and SDN operators. Vendors will learn the benefits of using containers when enhancing their SDN solution to support an increasing number of Neutron services, with a technical deep dive around comparing different container technologies, scheduling strategies and maintaining their operational health. Operators will learn how a Neutron SDN implementing service containers helps increase the scalability, efficiency and security of their cloud when supporting newer services for their tenants.

The attendees will also have the opportunity of seeing service containers in action during a live demo of the MidoNet SDN using containers to implement VPN-as-a-Service.
