OpenStack, Kubernetes and SaltStack for Complete Deployment Automation

Development and ops teams have to keep up with growing business requirements. On the one hand, software services are getting more complex, and you need to integrate multiple pieces of software for varying business requirements. On the other hand, time to market delivery cycles for products and related services are shortening, making efficient and rapid operations even more crucial.

OpenStack Heat offers blueprints for infrastructure, Kubernetes provides service definitions for containers, and SaltStack provides application stack definitions automating the entire delivery process for both approaches.

This talk presents the new salt-formulas project, which provides an ecosystem of more than 100 services, as well as how we can reuse the same components that power OpenStack itself for automation of the cloud or container workload as well. A demonstration that shows the provisioning of an application to both Kubernetes and OpenStack from the same formula definitions concludes the talk.

What can I expect to learn?
  • Openstack Heat templates
  • Kubernetes services
  • The Salt-formulas ecosystem
  • Reclass metadata management
  • Jenkins CI/CD pipelines
