Implications of 5G and Edge Computing on OpenStack
The advent of 5G and required densification have brought about opportunities for virtualization and broader distribution of RAN components - both in access and core networks. The challenges of the vRAN (virtualized RAN), however, are immense and will require a significant collaboration between the key stakeholders within the Cloud and Mobility industry. This presentation will address the following aspects of virtualizing RAN.
- Options of centralized vs. distributed RAN including a description of how gNB (next generation NodeB) functions will be distributed
- Potential candidates for virtualization and containerization of RAN components – both in access and core networks
- Implications on the network and the SDN choices/selections
- Integration with OpenStack based cloud management
- Integration with other ecosystems such as OPNFV, ODL, xRAN, Kubernetes, CNCF, OCI etc.
- Hybrid cloud options for 5G virtualized components
- Next steps
What can I expect to learn?
- Introduction to the ‘cloudification’ of 5G that would include both access and core network components
- Densification requirements
- gNB distributions – centralized vs. distributed
- Proposed changes in the core network
- Introduction to distributed deployment and management of OpenStack in small footprints
- Challenges of deploying virtualized RAN components into a hybrid cloud environment
- Exploring multi-tenant use of such a deployment for diverse set of workloads (VNF, CDN, AR/VR, IoT etc.)
