Scheduler Wars: A New Hope

Over the last 18 months, the OpenStack Nova development team has dramatically refactored some of the foundational parts of the core Nova software. As an operator, deployer or systems architect, you might have heard about "resource providers" or the new "Placement API" but haven't had the time to really dig in and find out what all the fuss is about.

Not to worry! Jay Pipes, a Nova core developer and old hat in the OpenStack ecosystem, will explain everything attendees need to know about the new Placement service and how resource tracking and scheduling decisions have been fundamentally transformed with the new resource providers modeling. Attendees will learn what specific deployment and configuration changes were optional in Newton but now required in Ocata and how to smoothly upgrade their existing OpenStack deployments and enable the new subsystems.

What can I expect to learn?

Attendees can expect to learn:

  • What problems is the new Placement service designed to solve?
  • What does the new Placement service mean for deployers, operators and architects
  • What do you need to do to smoothly transition from Newton to Ocata and enable new resource tracking functionality
  • How the new Placement service integrates with other OpenStack services like Ironic and Neutron
  • What features are planned for the Placement service near and long term
