Telco Use cases for Massively Distributed Edge Clouds

The Edge is the new battleground for virtualization technologies: Large enterprise, OEMs, cloud providers all have projects related to Edge. Telcos have a different perspective.

There are many emerging use cases for Telcos at the edge. Some are related to Virtualization of their own infrastructure (i.e. expanding NFV to the edge network with the likes of Virtual RAN and C-RAN), some are related to the capability for telcos to provide new services to their users from the edge with a higher quality of service guarantee, some are related to roaming and intercarrier services, others are related to Telcos hosting services and applications in their edge data centers.

The FEMDC group in openstack is looking at possible implementations of Openstack at the edge. We will examine this framework in relation to other efforts in the industry around Edge.

What can I expect to learn?

Attendees will get a view of what use cases have emerged around the industry that drive the need for Virtualization at the Edge of the Telco Network.

They will learn some of the details around the use cases that have been discussed at ETSI MEC, at fog consortiums, at TIP, at OPNFV, in Openstack groups and in the literature.

We will touch upon the framework that has been discussed in the FEMDC workgroup.

They will also learn some of the implications that are implied by those use cases.
