This project employs Akraino Integrated Cloud Native Edge Stack (ICN Blueprint) and Openstack StarlingX project separately to build an edge server which do remote graphical computing for client during gaming. The pixel information is calculated on edge server and sent to client. The edge server will run in a container environment to separate applications and make the whole system easy to deploy.

Nowadays, cloud services are popular. These services are always built on a large group of servers to form a platform which provide virtual cloud machine to customers. It saves web companies' effort to build physical server network themselves, which reduce their cost and thus make a big market. Edge cloud, different from the cloud services mentioned above, is more geographically distributed and has much smaller scale. The technologies for edge cloud are developing, and people are also exploring its potential. Our sponsor, Intel, is working on developing edge cloud stacks. Intel is one of the key contributors to Akraino ICN, a blueprint for cloud native NFV and edge applications. They are also devoted to StarlingX, a fully integrated edge stack hosted in Openstack. In this project, we are going to employ edge cloud for low latency cloud gaming using Akraino ICN and StarlingX separately. As we know, some popular web games tend to require a lot on hardware (to do graphical computing) and less on internet speed. However, good equipment with high computational power is expensive and thus unnecessary for most people, while high internet speed is cheaper and cheaper. To solve it, we can run game on an edge cloud and send computed graph data to user. This will require low computational power and high internet speed. With fast and stable internet connection, cloud gaming will have a good performance on computation-required web games. What's more, compared to current cloud gaming services, the latency of edge cloud will be lower because of shorter geographical distance. This is edge cloud's advantage over current cloud, which makes it more suitable for cloud gaming.
