Disaggregation of RAN (Radio Access Network) elements into CU (Central Unit) and DU (Distributed Unit) components is one of the key features of 5G network. Accordingly, the CU components can now be deployed as virtualized applications at edge locations (e.g., Central Offices). This phenomenon, however, has brought about interesting deployment challenges as well as new business opportunities for the service providers.

In this presentation, we will share:

• An overview of vRAN (virtualized RAN) components in relationship to the 5G architecture.

• Key infrastructure (i.e., compute, storage and networking) requirements for vRAN deployment.

• Role of OpenStack, Kubernetes, Akraino, ONAP etc. for deploying vRAN at edge locations.

• Security, reliability and scaling requirements of vRAN.

• Hardware footprint limitation at the edge sites and how it could be addressed.

• A demo showing a vRAN application being stood up on a containerized cloud infrastructure deployed by Airship.
