Hardware Offload Networks of Kubernetes through OpenStack

To build large-scale Internet services (e.g. online video applications) on Kubernetes, a flexible and high-performance networking solution is required. However, current Kubernetes networking solutions have either poor performance or poor portability, which undermines the advantages of containerization.

In this proposal, we will share an OpenStack based Kubernetes networking solution, which provides overlay network, hybrid workloads connectivity, multi-tenancy, and at the same time, is hardware offloaded for acceleration. In this solution, OpenStack Kuryr offers Kubernetes the network facilities from OpenStack Neutron. OpenStack Dragonflow is used to provide an OpenFlow based data-plane, which can be offloaded to physical network interfaces through OVS TC Flower offload feature. We will explore issues when applying the solution and compare the network performance of this solution with host network and overlay network based on Flannel.

What can I expect to learn?
  • This session will demonstrate a high-performance and flexible Kubernetes networking, which enables hybrid workload configurations, like bare metal or in-VM pods accessing pre-existing services that run on VMs. By mitigating the overhead of virtual networks, the solution provides a production-ready networking for both VMs and Containers.
  • This session will compare network performance of the presented solution with existing Kubernetes network solutions.  Attendees will have some intuitive knowledge about the performance impact.
  • This proposal is essentially based on Linux TC Flower offload technology, which was implemented in Linux 4.9. It is possible for other Kubernetes networking solutions to adopt the same technology for network acceleration.
  • This session will show the advantages of bring Open-Sourced platforms together. It will hopefully promote the combined usage of OpenStack and Kubernetes.
