Getting OpenStack users involved in the project

There are a lot of OpenStack users out there, and only a small share of them are getting involved upstream. It is a traditional issue for open source projects, but on our side are we really doing all we can to attract those contributions and making candidates successful ? A lot of OpenStack processes were built around full-time contributors coming from a development background. What can and should we change ?

In this session we'll discuss:

  • Culture changes to better support part-time contributors: how to make them more successful, provide value and grow in the community despite limited involvement
  • How to create a more welcoming environment
  • Setting up a more progressive involvement ladder: "join the mailing-list" might be too big of a first step
  • Success or failure of the SIGs to attract users into contributing around communities of practice and shared interest
