In this case study we present how we built a secure and private OpenStack based edge cloud platform for the textile industry. We will explain how we enable the transition for Oerlikon's manufacturing customers to support all the new required digital products that make Industry 4.0 work.
This talk is based on a real customer use case using a combined technology stack in a textile production factory in Vietnam.
We outline our architectural choices to support highly complex manufacturing processes with lots of legacy systems that were never made to run in a cloud environment as well as independent factories spilling out millions of data points per second, thus making further measures for automation and deeper process integration necessary. To facilitate this big data task and to enable new products in the area of machine learning - we truly had to find our own interpretation of what edge means to us and our customers.
Attendees will learn about the evaluation process and necessary steps to build an Edge Cloud Platform based on OpenStack that provides reliable cloud resources to the manufacturing edge. We will explain our deployment model and hardware setup, leveraging hyperconverged systems in a cloud environment.
Furthermore we will showcase a real world example of how we use machine learning to make Industry 4.0 work.
