The Chinese community has had 8 bug hackathon/bug smash events and generated close to 800 bug fixes for Openstack in the last 3-4 years. These are "community" lead and organized events with great successes in the sense of creating "tangible" outputs, facililating interesting discussions, bringing the community together and providing a safe environment for new comers to be easily integrated into community. In this panel, we will have the event organizers from Huawei, Intel, and Tencent to share with us their experiences in organizing such events, and discuss the possibility of making these events global and creating more impact for our community and user base. In addition, we will discuss how these events could be extended to cover the new "Open Infrastructue" aspect, meaning how to work with the adjacent projects and communities.
Attendees will learn how to plan, organize, and run a hackathon type of events. We will discuss the challenges in getting funding, attracting developers, and mobilizing developers and the opportunities of the type of hackathons that our community might need as we are moving into the "Open Infrastructure" direction
