IPv6 Primer for Deployments

Despite enjoying its 20th birthday in January, many engineers find themselves intimidated by the apparent complexity of IPv6. Those that have ventured past the basics have often grown equally frustrated with vendor, provider & application support leaving many deployments in the cold.

Light is glimmering in the distance with worldwide access to IPv6 climbing through 10%. Services are attainable, applications (might) work and real users are connected.

Those new to IPv6 will be learn that things are not that complex. Those that are already familiar with IPv6 will also enjoy a review of the recommended and operational changes made to IPv6 as networks have built out worldwide in the last decade. Does the RFC really require an entire /48 allocation to each user and just how do you configure a DNS resolver anyway?

Finally we will review the state of IPv6 support in major OpenStack components and ensure you are left with renewed energy to tackle your own IPv6 deployments with enthusiasm.

What can I expect to learn?

You will be given a primer on the basics of IPv6 and including how addressing and subnets work with comparisons drawn to IPv6. I will show you that it is not difficult or complex and how your existing IPv4 skills are transferrable.

We will then learn about changes made in the last few years to previously recommended standards or models of deployment as many people learnt the basics 5+ years ago and many things have changed including subnet size recommendations, address configuration mechanisms, etc and a brief overview of the current deployment rate of IPv6 in some countries and services.

To finish out the talk we will look at the major OpenStack projects as well as closely related ecosystem items (such as deployment frameworks, vendored openstack solutions) for their state of IPv6 support and any blockers that may prevent you moving forward.
