What the heck are DHSS driver modes in OpenStack Manila?

OpenStack Manila provides secure filesystem storage over the network. In multi-tenant environments, it is expected that file shares are isolated between different tenants in the data path. Achieving strong guarantees for data path isolation requires back end support, and cloud administrators can configure their deployments to provide such isolation. This involves understanding a not-so-simple option named "driver_handles_share_servers" (DHSS) which defines the mode that back end drivers operate with. The choice of driver mode presents a whole set of capabilities to users, including secure data path isolation and the ability to interface with their own private networks and security services.

In this presentation, we will unravel the design and discuss reasons why administrators and users should care about DHSS.

What can I expect to learn?

Attendees will learn several things:

  • differences between the two driver modes that exist in manila.
  • how to make appropriate choices among manila backends given their cloud's degree of need for isolation of storage and storage network isolation between different tenants and tenant networks.
  • features and effective control with specific driver modes.
  • configuring back ends with regards to different driver modes.
