Hybrid Cloud War Stories: Building a Next-Gen TV and Media Platform Using OpenStack and AWS

This session will detail the operational and technical challenges SkyTV (New Zealand's leading TV provider) have had in introducing OpenStack to their environment: from creating a specialised 'Cloud Ops' team to run and manage the platform all the way through to educating the wider business about the operational benefits OpenStack would provide.
Details will be provided on the technical solution put in place, and how SkyTV have used Heat, Ansible & other automation technologies to rapidly provision, update and manage complex application and networking environments across both public and private clouds. SkyTV have built a truly hybrid cloud platform based on OpenStack and AWS, and we want to share their expertise on how to make development and deployment processes seamless across both platforms.

What can I expect to learn?

Attendees should expect to learn how to start the 'journey' of bringing an OpenStack cloud into production. This includes some gotchas, how to bring and keep the company along for the ride and maintaining harmony with developers and IT ops.

There will also be the opportunity to learn how OpenStack can seamlessly fit into an existing CI/CD pipeline driven by Bamboo.

Automation experts can learn how to start maximising the usage of Heat with robust templates that produce a complex, multi-tiered architecture across many networks and projects. There will be discussion around how to drive Heat with Ansible and make sure that the right tool is doing the right job.

Attendees will also have access to versions of the Heat templates and scripts used in the SkyTV environment, shared via GitHub.
