Grow Your Community: Inspire an Impostor

The OpenStack community is highly collaborative, fast-paced, and helpful. However, some new community members are overwhelmed with new terminology and detailed processes, especially those with impostor syndrome.  They struggle with an internal battle where their confidence and competence are not aligned.

Impostor syndrome is a psychological phenomenon that affects people from all backgrounds and all skill levels. They feel like their competence level is much lower than it really is and they feel this way on a regular basis. This can cause community members to become detached or feel incapable of providing meaningful contributions.

This isn’t simply being humble -- it’s something entirely different.

Major Hayden, principal architect at Rackspace, will lead the audience through a discussion around impostor syndrome, how to identify it, and how to overcome it.

What can I expect to learn?

Attendees will learn how to define impostor syndrome through a brief story, a humorous series of images, and a more clinical explanation. We will also talk about how to identify impostor syndrome in ourselves and within an open source community.

Finally, we will use the OODA loop to give attendees guidance for overcoming impostor syndrome for themselves and for others in their community.
