Dr. Yu (Jason) Gu is currently a research scientist for Watson Health Cloud at IBM Watson Health. Previously he was with Mobile Enterprise Computing Group, Future Systems Department, IBM Research-Austin. Before IBM, he was an assistant professor at Singapore University of Technology and Design from 2010 to 2014 and managing over 15 million Singapore Dollars funding support from various government agencies and industrial partners. He also held a joint appointment as a research scientist at Advanced Digital Sciences Center, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. In 2011, he was also a visiting assistant professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology for a year. He received his PhD from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in 2010. Currently his research spans cloud computing, mobile computing, cyber-physical systems, wireless networks, RFID systems, energy networks, smart grids and network system securities.
Dr. Gu is the author and co-author of over 100 peer-reviewed papers in premier journals and conferences in his fields, with the best paper/demo awards from ACM BuildSys'14 (runner-up), IEEE GlobeCom'14 (best 50 papers), QShine'14, IEEE WCNC’13, IEEE/ACM IPSN’12 (runner-up), MSN’11 and ACM SenSys’10 (runner-up), as well as spotlight papers in IEEE TMC and IEEE TPDS. His publications have been selected as graduate-level course and seminar materials by over 20 major research universities in the United States and other countries. He has been featured by IEEE Gold as an outstanding member under 35. He is the recipient of NSF/IEEE-TCPP Curriculum Initiative on Parallel and Distributed Computing Early Adopter Award in 2012 and IBM Smarter Planet Faculty Innovation Award, 2012. Dr. Gu is a member of IEEE, IEEE ComSoc and ACM.
