Speaker Profile:

James is a candidate in the January 2023 Board Elections .

James has been nominated enough times to appear on the election ballot. You can read the answers James gave to the election questions below.

What is your relationship to OpenStack Foundation (OSF), and why is its success important to you? What would you say is your biggest contribution to the OSF and the success of its projects to date?

I have worked for and with the Open Infrastructure Foundation since its inception, as a contributor to OpenStack, OpenDev, Zuul, and other projects.  My largest contribution is in helping to construct the development methodology and systems that are integral to the way our community works.  I started a company to help support Zuul and work closely with the foundation in efforts to promote it.

Describe your experience with other non-profits or serving as a board member. How does your experience prepare you for the role of a board member?

I have worked with a number of public interest organizations, not only the Open Infrastructure Foundation itself (I participated in its creation and became one of the first employees), but I have also worked at the Free Software Foundation and UC Berkeley.  I am familiar with the community and the fiscal environment in which we operate.

What do you see as the Board's role in OpenStack's success?

The board is an enabling force in the success of all Open Infrastructure Foundation projects.  They are not here to tell the projects what to do (projects have their own leadership) but to ensure that the Foundation is well supported and resourced to support member projects and their needs.

What do you think the top priority of the Board should be over the next year?

The Foundation wants to grow the number of projects under its umbrella, and the board should help to support and advance that effort.
