Q

What is your relationship to OpenStack Foundation (OSF), and why is its success important to you? What would you say is your biggest contribution to the OSF and the success of its projects to date?

A

Currently, I am the CTO of China Unicom Cloud Company and we are the golden member of OpenStack. We adopted OpenStack since 2013. Now we have more than 100 resource pools running OpenStack. It's about tens of thousands of servers and bring us more than 1 billion RMB revenue every year.

Q

Describe your experience with other non-profits or serving as a board member. How does your experience prepare you for the role of a board member?

I got involved with open source since 2000 with many projects including Embedded Linux, Meego(Btrfs), Ceph, Hadoop, and OpenStack. I have contributed code to Linux btrfs and XFS and also an invited speaker on Meego conference 2011. For now, our development team are very active in SODA (Linux foudation project) and KubeEdge(CNCF project). I am also the Chair of Chinese commuity for SODA project.

I think I know open source quite well and I have good network in chinese technical community. I am passionate to promote open source projects like OpenStack and make it more solid in China.

Q

What do you see as the Board's role in OpenStack's success?

A

China is now the critical market for OpenStack and Chinese cloud market is unique. Besides the big growth of public cloud, industry cloud and private cloud is still very hot which is the main field for OpenStack. I think we need to get closer to the requirement and user scenario in china. There is still huge space to grow OpenStack.

Q

What do you think the top priority of the Board should be over the next year?

A

I think the next big thing for OSF should be edge computing. And it's also big opportunity to telecom company like us especially in 5G era. We have got quite a few requirements from customers and I plan to put more efforts into projects like StarlingX and KubeEdge. I am expecting to make big progress in this filed next year.
