Global Top 10 Automaker Adopts OpenStack for Enterprise-Wide Private Cloud

With the proliferation of onboard computers and sensors in modern vehicles, the automotive industry is projected to be the second largest generator of data by 2015 (McKinsey Global Institute. “Big data: The next frontier for innovation, competition, and productivity.” June, 2011). To harness such data for its competitive advantage, a global Top 10 auto manufacturer recently launched a big data initiative, using OpenStack-powered cloud infrastructure to build an enterprise-wide private cloud at one-tenth the cost of its legacy solution.

A white paper published today by the OpenStack Foundation describes how the auto manufacturer sought to leverage massive amounts of data being generated by the cars themselves as well as by customers, dealers, service departments, insurance organizations, online forums and social media platforms. The objective was to share information and analysis across all of the company’s global business units, partners and consumers to gain competitive advantages in research and development, product development, sales and marketing, and customer service.

Partnering with Solinea, a leading OpenStack software and services company, the auto manufacturer designed a “car cloud” that unifies its data streams, breaks down communication silos, and rapidly increases the velocity of analytical analysis that drives innovation. The white paper demonstrates the impact of OpenStack as an enterprise solution not only by quantifying the cost savings, but also by providing hard metrics on performance, scaling and agility, including the following: The half-rack proof-of-concept (POC) using OpenStack was completed at a cost of $125,000, compared to the $1.2 million legacy appliance. In a test with telematics data and Hadoop, the performance on the OpenStack car cloud clocked in at 40 minutes (before optimization), while the same job on the legacy appliance was unable to compute the function. The test team was able to fine-tune the OpenStack architecture on specific workloads, which wasn’t possible on the legacy solution.

With such stark quantifiable results, specific metrics and flexibility, funding for the OpenStack Hadoop car cloud was quickly justified, enabling the planning and execution of a ramp-up to 10 racks over a period of six months. “Every day more enterprises are choosing OpenStack because of its flexibility, cost advantage, performance, and support for the the largest number of enterprise technologies,” said Jonathan Bryce, executive director of the OpenStack Foundation.

OpenStack Summit in Paris, November 3-7

The OpenStack Summit taking place this November in Paris will feature two tracks that will be of particular relevance to IT leaders evaluating or getting started with OpenStack. In the Enterprise IT Strategies track, participants will discuss how OpenStack is meeting enterprise IT technical requirements and cover topics relevant to planning an enterprise cloud strategy, including culture change, cost management, vendor strategy and recruiting. In the User Stories track, participants will hear best practices, challenges and recommendations directly from enterprises that are using OpenStack to address their business problems.

Early Bird Registration is open and discounts on both “Full Access” and “Keynote+Expo only” passes are available through August 27. A limited number of media and analyst passes are available to OpenStack Summit Paris. Contact us at [email protected] for more information.
