Statement of Interest

We use and contribute to OpenStack.

With more than 10 years of experience in virtualization, systems administration and data engineering Jarrod has worked in some of the largest and busiest environments in the world. At Embrane his primary role is guiding the development, implementation and testing of the heleos Openstack Neutron plugin. He has overseen the deployment of more than 15 large scale Openstack deployments going as far back as the Cactus release. His passion for open source is only trumped by his passion for life and when he is not building Openstack environments, he enjoys powerlifting, sailing and living.

I'm involved in the following OpenStack projects: Nova,Quantum,Heat,Openstack-manuals,DevStack

Jarrod is a candidate in the 2014 Board Election.

What is your relationship to OpenStack, and why is its success important to you? What would you say is your biggest contribution to OpenStack's success to date?

I have deployed Openstack in a number of different functions. The idea that the implementors of cloud environments should be beholden to a single vendor is a joke to me and I want to see Openstack be the name that is thought of when people think about large scale cloud infrastructure.

Describe your experience with other non profits or serving as a board member. How does your experience prepare you for the role of a board member?

I sat on the technical advisory board of, a non-profit radio station in Spokane Washington. As the leader of the technology board I provided guidance for implementing and choosing technology for the radio station during several periods of growth. I did this while a college student studying for my bachelor's degree. I also worked with multiple 501-c3 rehabilitation centers for disadvantaged youth in the Skagit Valley area of Washington state and assisted with grant writing in other organizations.

What do you see as the Board's role in OpenStack's success?

The board has members from several industry leaders in cloud business, the board plays a critical role in bridging the gap between the businesses implementing OpenStack and the foundation as a whole. As such the board needs to focus on helping each project become more easily consumable for businesses. The most critical role we play as board members is enabling business to be more effective through superior technology and being able to deliver metrics that will allow for the measurement of said effectiveness.

What do you think the top priority of the Board should be in 2014?

It is critical that we stay focused on enabling competition in the cloud hosting space. Competition drives innovation.

We need more density, faster services and more agile networks. Let's work hard to enable more businesses get into the cloud space with OpenStack.
