Expand Eco-system around OpenStack and related Open Source


Tsugikazu SHIBATA is working for OSS promotion Center of NEC. He is activily working for the Linux and OpenStack community over 10 years. He is having a senior role of Open Source conference such as LinuxCon and CloudOpen to advocate join and work for the Open Source community especially for Japanese and Asian developers. He is also member of the board of the Linux Foundation since 2006. His role of the Linux Foundation is to expand eco system of using and adopting Linux for Japan and Asian countries. He is also a technical committee member of the Open Invention Network as a repsetentative of NEC. Solving IP issue of the Open Source will becoming very important even for OpenStack.

By these backgournd, he is leading OpenStack development team in NEC and the team is actively contributing OpenStack development community with three of core developers. He is also leading a Open source development project called LTSI (Long Term Support Inititative) that is to keep Linux Kernel stable as longer term to be useful for industry. This is a Linux community's activity but for OpenStack, this may be a reference.

Tsugikazu is a candidate in the 2014 Board Election.


What is your relationship to OpenStack, and why is its success important to you? What would you say is your biggest contribution to OpenStack's success to date?


I have direct connection with OpenStack Foundation, core industry members and the community. OpenStack is  key technologies of cloud computing for many companies including NEC and I have been promoting OpenStack in Japan and Asian market with providing our own solution.

Our biggerst contribution is:
- Joined OpenStack Foundation as first company from Japan and started to promote OpenStack in Japan
- Contribution to OpenStack community : Neutron, Nova, QA and Horizon
I am leading OpenStack community development team in NEC. In Havana, NEC is in the top 10 contribution companies with three of core developers.


Describe your experience with other non profits or serving as a board member. How does your experience prepare you for the role of a board member?


I serverd as a board member of the LinuxFoundation since 2007. I am a member of the technical committee of Open Invernstion Network( OIN). Also, I am a steering committee member of  Japan Open Soure Promotion Forum. By such role and experience, I will be able to help coordinate with other initiatives to spred of OpenStack Eco-system.


What do you see as the Board's role in OpenStack's success?


- Define OpenStack what it covers
- Spread OpenStack Eco-system in Asia and Japan
- Help reduce IP and legal risk to coordinate with other initiatives


What do you think the top priority of the Board should be in 2014?


- Complete the discsussion of core definition and publish it

- Promote adoption of OpenStack in Asia and Japan market to expand Eco-system
