Mirantis From (Current)
Statement of Interest

I am interested in OpenStack becoming the number one Open Source Cloud OS

My name is Alex Freedland, I am the co-founder and Chairman of Mirantis. Together with my partners, we bet our company on the success of OpenStack and are currently the largest independent company focusing on delivering lock-in-free and agnostic OpenStack to the customers worldwide.

Prior to starting Mirantis, I have co-founded several other businesses, some of which are operating today and some have successfully exited.

I reside in the SF Bay Area and have two children, one in college and one in high school.

Alex is a candidate in the 2014 Board Election.

What is your relationship to OpenStack, and why is its success important to you? What would you say is your biggest contribution to OpenStack's success to date?

In my current role, I oversee the Mirantis community contribution strategy. I have been championing the ideas of transparency inside OpenStack ecosystem. This is how the project Stackalystics ( allowing to have a 360 degree of transparency of contributions.

Under my leadership, Mirantis has become the top-5 committer to OpenStack in Havana

I focused our company on delivering all the OpenStack-related innovation upstream on Stackforce, resulting in Miranits being the Number One contributor of open source innovation in the greater OpenStack ecosystem. We were able to dedicate more than 120 engineers to contributing up-stream. We have contriuted to almost all core projects and have championed new community projects such as Savanna, Murano, FUEL, Rally, Rubick, Mistral, etc. just to name a few.

Through our marketing and technology efforts, we have been able to assemble one of the largest OpenStack customer portfolio in the industry. Some of the customers have become vocal case studies promoting OpenStack quite heavily.

Mirantis training organization has been the most active in the industry, introducing more than 2,000 engineers around the world on OpenStack.

Describe your experience with other non profits or serving as a board member. How does your experience prepare you for the role of a board member?

I have no prior experience as a board member of other non-profits.

What do you see as the Board's role in OpenStack's success?

The role of the Board should be in the transparent governance of the Foundation. The areas that Board should own and protect are as follows:

1. Promotion and Marketing of OpenStack

2. Licensing and protection of the integrity of the ecosystem

3. Increasing the size, the diversity, and the balance of the community

What do you think the top priority of the Board should be in 2014?

The top areas that the Board should focus on in 2014 are as follows:

1. Ensure transparency of all processes.

2. Find ways to ensure meritocracy-based competition inside the OpenStack Ecosystem

3. Find ways to attract innovations from the third parties (customers, vendors) who are not necessarily OpenStack insiders.

4. Enable key customers to influence the development of OpenSTack.
