Bio

My name is Alex Freedland, I am the co-founder and Chairman of Mirantis. Together with my partners, we bet our company on the success of OpenStack we are currently the largest independent company focusing on delivering pure-play OpenStack to the customers worldwide.

At Mirantis, I run the Community Initiatives. Under my leadership, Mirantis has become the top-3 contributor to OpenStack by commits and reviews (according to Juno stats) and we are the only private company amongst Top-10 contributors).

Mirantis is also laser-focused on making customers (large and small) adopt OpenStack at scale. With that in mind, we have also pioneered such StackForge projects as Fuel (the point and click installer), Rally (a popular framework for scalability testing of OpenStack) and Murano (an intuitive was to automate workload orchestration on top of OpenStack). All of these projects are gaining community momentum and we hope that some of them will become part of OpenStack in the not so distant future.

Prior to starting Mirantis, I have co-founded several other businesses, some of which are operating today and some have successfully exited.

I was born in Moscow, Russia, and currently reside in the SF Bay Area.

Alex is a candidate in the 2015 Board Election .

Q

Describe your experience with other non profits or serving as a board member. How does your experience prepare you for the role of a board member?

A

I currently serve as an Independent Board member of the OpenStack Foundation. I am also the Chairman of the Finance Committee.

Q

What do you see as the Board's role in OpenStack's success?

A

The Board’s main mission is to focus on the protection and promotion of the OpenStack IP and Brand. The Board should enable the Technical community to contribute code in the areas that are relevant for massive customer adoption.

Q

What do you think the top priority of the Board should be in 2014?

A

In my mind the top two OpenStack priorities for 2015 are

- Stability and scalability of core OpenStack

- Workload migration/management on top of OpenStack

The Board's priority is to

- Create general awareness of the top priorities

- Remove obstacles for the contributors to increase the speed of innovation
